We are an anti-racist school
Our vision and aims
Our vision is to be an anti-racist school that fully grasps and understands the impact of racism in all its forms and manifestations. We believe that education is the key to eliminating racism.
We will do the necessary work year on year to become anti-racist, acknowledging that the work and the change is our responsibility.
Our systems, policies, and practices reduce inequity for Black and Racially Minoritised (BRM) pupils and we aim to truly understand the diverse and intersecting lived experiences of Black & Racially Minoritised pupils, parents and staff who are part of St Luke’s School Community.
We aim to embed anti-racist principles in how we think and act in our everyday practice, policies, curriculum and relationships with pupils, parent/carers and staff.
We work closely with anti-racist lead teachers across the city to develop and incorporate best anti-racist practice that can be shared across the city as part of Brighton and Hove’s Anti- Racist Education Strategy. Their vision statement is:
Creating a community of anti-racist education settings where:
• the complexities of our diverse interwoven histories are acknowledged,
• where every child can learn and thrive,
• where everyone feels safe and equal
• where we all have a strong sense of identity and belonging.
St Luke’s is committed to this city-wide vision
Brighton and Hove’s strategy identifies seven areas where we aim to nurture change at St Luke’s. These are:
· Training for leaders, staff and governors
· Black and racially minoritised child, pupil, parent and carer support and amplified voice
· Anti-racist leadership, evidence gathering and strategy
· Racial literacy for children and pupils
· Diversifying and decolonising the curriculum
· Environment, culture, values and policies (Responding to incidents and issues)
· Black and racially minoritised staff and governor recruitment, progression, retention and voice
If you would like to find out more about what we do at St Luke’s, please see our Anti-Racist policy on the policies page.
